Maiden Voyage is the fifth album led by jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder on 17 March 1965 for Blue Note Records, released as BLP 4195 and BST 84195. The album features Hancock alongside tenor saxophonist George Coleman, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams. It is a concept album designed to evoke an oceanic atmosphere, with many tracks referencing marine biology and the sea, and showcasing a unique use of space in the music.
Coleman, Carter, Williams, and Hancock had recently been members of the Miles Davis quintet. Initial recording attempts for tracks including “Maiden Voyage”, “Little One”, and “Dolphin Dance” were made six days prior, but those performances were rejected and have since been lost. A version of “Little One” was later recorded by Miles Davis for the 1965 album E.S.P., with Wayne Shorter replacing Coleman.
Hancock cited Count Basie’s “Shiny Stockings” as a primary inspiration for “Dolphin Dance”.
The album has received significant acclaim, with The Penguin Guide to Jazz including it in its Core Collection and awarding it four stars, describing it as “a colossal achievement from a man still just 24 years old”. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic lauded it as “arguably his finest record of the ’60s”, noting its balance between accessible, lyrical jazz and adventurous hard bop.
Several tracks from the album, including “Maiden Voyage”, “The Eye of the Hurricane”, and “Dolphin Dance”, have become jazz standards and are featured in Hal Leonard’s New Real Book vol. 2. Hancock has spoken of “Maiden Voyage” as his favourite composition, initially created for a television commercial. He revisited these pieces in various recordings: reinterpreting “Maiden Voyage” and “Dolphin Dance” on his 1974 album Dedication, updating “Maiden Voyage” on Perfect Machine (1988), and re-recording “Dolphin Dance” for the Herbie Hancock Trio album (1981). Additionally, Hancock has performed live versions of “Maiden Voyage” on CoreaHancock (1979) and An Evening With Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea: In Concert (1980), and with the VSOP Quintet on VSOP: Tempest in the Colosseum (1977).
