There’s a quiet defiance running through Magic Seeds. Not the shouty kind, but the sort that dares you to lean in, slow down, and really listen. Across his third and most personal album to date, James offers a textured, open-hearted collage—equal parts dreamscape and document—stitched together over two years of obsessive refinement and deep collaboration.

From the opening swell of “Smoke in the Air”, there’s a spectral weight to the record, like exhaled breath hanging in cold morning air. But it never feels heavy. James has always skirted easy genre markers—his earlier work touched on IDM, neo-classical, avant-jazz—but Magic Seeds finds him more fluid than ever, weaving threads of Massive Attack’s slow-burn dread, Madlib’s dusty loops, and the loose-limbed live energy of Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden. There’s grit, too: warped sub-bass on “Lay” evokes mid-2000s London clubs, while “Inner Child” bristles with tension, like Jeff Buckley channelling garage through cracked circuitry.

It’s also his most collaborative album, shaped by a core studio session with Leo Taylor, Raven Bush and Oli Bayston—an all-day improvisation distilled into something spacious, alive, and unpredictable. You can feel that looseness on tracks like “Forest of Love”, where choral bursts cut through motorik rhythms, or on “Wake Up Spring”, a harp-laced moment of lullaby calm. At its brightest, Magic Seeds glows with life-affirming warmth—“Alive”, “Euphoria”—but James never lets the light get too comfortable. There’s always shadow somewhere near.

He speaks of reseeding humanity, of returning to basics. And maybe that’s what Magic Seeds is: a quiet reclaiming of nuance in an era that flattens everything for impact. It doesn’t shout. It swells. It slips under your skin. And it lingers.
