A lo-fi legend in its rawest form.

The Madvillainy Demos capture the earliest sketches of a now-iconic collaboration between MF DOOM and Madlib. Grainy, brilliant blueprints of a record that reshaped underground hip-hop. Tracked and roughly mixed in 2002 at Madlib’s Bomb Shelter studio in Los Angeles, these versions contain DOOM’s original vocal takes and Madlib’s first-beat drafts, before the pair reworked the material following an infamous leak.

That leak, shared online two years before the album’s release, could have derailed the project entirely. Instead, it cemented the album’s mystique. DOOM re-recorded vocals (throwing sly jabs at the leak on “Rhinestone Cowboy”), and Madlib refined his production. When Madvillainy finally dropped in 2004, it was unlike anything else; woozy, cryptic, and dense with samples. Pitchfork called it “one of the most anticipated releases in underground rap history.” The demos show where it all began.

Now pressed to vinyl for the first time, The Madvillainy Demos offer more than just curiosity. They reveal a process: Madlib’s skeletal loops, DOOM’s unvarnished flow, the dusty tape hiss that speaks to urgency over polish. Familiar tracks emerge in unfamiliar forms. Sometimes looser, sometimes eerier, always compelling.

For fans, it’s a chance to revisit Madvillainy through the lens of possibility. Before the edits, before the final sequencing, before it became canon. Just two minds, one mic, and a pile of records — making history, before they knew it.
