Few live recordings capture the raw, chaotic beauty of Nirvana quite like Live and Loud. Filmed at Seattle’s Pier 48 on 13 December 1993 — just months before Kurt Cobain’s death — the performance feels like both a victory lap and a swan song. Originally broadcast in abridged form by MTV on New Year’s Eve that year, the full set didn’t see an official release until 2013, as part of the 20th anniversary of In Utero.

The concert itself is pure catharsis. With In Utero’s jagged ferocity still fresh, the band tears through “Serve the Servants” and “Scentless Apprentice” with venom, before leaning into older favourites like “Drain You” and “Lithium.” There’s no “Smells Like Teen Spirit” here — a deliberate omission that speaks volumes. Instead, the band deliver a setlist that feels defiantly curated, more interested in intensity than nostalgia.

Cobain, flanked by Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and touring guitarist Pat Smear, commands the stage with weary brilliance. Cellist Lori Goldston adds unexpected texture, giving songs like “All Apologies” a mournful grace. By the time they reach the closing “Endless, Nameless,” the performance dissolves into chaos — guitars smashed, stage wrecked, Cobain spitting into the camera lens. It’s destructive, unfiltered, and unforgettable. It’s not polished, nor should it be — this is Nirvana at their most alive: ragged, electric, and unafraid to implode in real time.

Two decades on, Live and Loud remains one of the most vital documents of the grunge era — a time capsule of sound, fury, and the strange poetry that made Nirvana immortal.
