Exmortus’ Legions of the Undead EP confirms the band’s unwavering mastery of their craft, delivering an exhilarating blend of neoclassical shredding, fierce vocals, and thrash energy. The title track and “Swallow Your Soul” are highlights, striking the perfect balance between technical solos and memorable choruses. Their ability to navigate from fast thrash to powerful mid-tempo grooves showcases their musical maturity.
The production is top-notch, with Jadran Gonzalez and Chase Becker’s guitars slicing through the mix, Adrian Aguilar’s drums pounding with precision, and Philip Nunez’s bass grounding the low-end perfectly.
The original tracks set the tone, but the three covers vary in impact. Exmortus give Danny Elfman’s Beetlejuice theme a fresh, bass-driven spin, and their take on Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain is a triumph, perfectly blending their style with the classical score. The Psycho theme, however, feels less effective in their shredding hands.
Overall, Legions of the Undead is a thrilling and promising release, reaffirming Exmortus’ talent and leaving us eager for more. If their next album continues in this vein, the anticipation will only grow.
