Released in 2022, Land of Kali marks a remarkable return for Essential Logic, arriving 43 years after the band’s debut and proving that time has done little to diminish their adventurous spirit. Co-produced by Youth, the album reunites Lora Logic with the avant-garde energy that made Essential Logic such a distinctive voice in the early post-punk movement, while embracing a more reflective and spiritual outlook.
Across the record, the band’s unmistakable blend of jagged post-punk, expressive saxophone lines and experimental songwriting remains firmly intact. This time, however, the music is infused with imagery drawn from Lora Logic’s Vaishnava faith, weaving themes of spirituality, mythology and inner discovery into the band’s characteristically unconventional sound.
Among the highlights is “Prayer for Peace”, a heartfelt reimagining of the song first recorded with former X-Ray Spex bandmate Poly Styrene for the 1995 album Conscious Consumer. Elsewhere, “Alien Boys” channels the unease and uncertainty of lockdown into a strikingly dystopian atmosphere, while “Sky Rocket”, co-written with Lora’s daughter Malini, reflects on life’s unpredictable journey with warmth and imagination.
Rather than revisiting the past, Land of Kali feels like the natural continuation of Essential Logic’s creative evolution. It captures a band still eager to experiment, still willing to challenge convention and still capable of producing music that feels both intellectually engaging and emotionally resonant. More than four decades after their debut, Essential Logic return with an album that is as bold, curious and uncompromising as ever.
