With Kicking Up the Dust, their sixth studio album, Cast deliver a dynamic return that blends their signature Britpop charm with a fresh, contemporary edge. Released on 21 April 2017, it marks a significant milestone for the band, featuring bassist Jay Lewis in place of founding member Pete Wilkinson and the long-awaited return of drummer Keith O’Neill to the studio fold.

Recorded at Liverpool’s Motor Museum with producer Al Groves, Kicking Up the Dust reflects a refreshed approach to songwriting and recording. John Power and Liam ‘Skin’ Tyson laid the groundwork with an early version of “Baby Blue Eyes”, before the rest of the band joined to build the album’s layered and robust sound. What emerges is an accomplished collection that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

The title track bursts out of the gate with storming energy, followed by the anthemic “Roar”. Lead single “Do That” is irresistibly catchy, combining groove-laden rhythms with sharp pop sensibilities, showcasing Power’s knack for crafting timeless hooks. Meanwhile, “Paper Chains” offers a soulful ballad tinged with a touch of Motown flair, its heartfelt lyrics delivering a poignant punch.

The reimagined “Baby Blue Eyes” is a standout, with Tyson’s soaring guitar work elevating the track to new heights. Elsewhere, “Every Little Thing You Do” shimmers with emotional depth and atmospheric beauty, evoking the classic balladry of “Walkaway” and “Magic Hour”. Each track benefits from the band’s unmistakable chemistry, with Lewis’ basslines anchoring the sound, O’Neill’s drumming providing precision and power, and Tyson’s guitar adding a dazzling edge.
