Just Like That...

Bonnie Raitt’s Just Like That… doesn’t announce itself with fanfare. Instead, it eases in like an old friend—weathered, warm, and full of hard-won wisdom. Released on 22 April 2022, her 18th studio album finds the singer-songwriter firmly in her element, blending blues, soul, Americana, and folk into something familiar yet quietly revelatory.

This is Raitt’s first album in six years and her third under her own Redwing Records imprint. Longtime collaborators Ricky Fataar and James “Hutch” Hutchinson anchor the rhythm section, adding to the album’s lived-in feel. But while the players are seasoned, there’s nothing tired here. If anything, Just Like That… sounds sharper with every spin.

Lead single “Made Up Mind” grooves with restrained fire, its soulful defiance earning Raitt the Grammy for Best Americana Performance. The title track, meanwhile, is the heart of the record—winning both Song of the Year and Best American Roots Song at the 2023 Grammys. It’s a quietly devastating piece of storytelling, tender and precise, delivered with the kind of emotional clarity that only Raitt can conjure.

Elsewhere, she shifts gears with ease. “Livin’ for the Ones” is a bluesy stomp with an undercurrent of survivor’s guilt; “Something’s Got a Hold of My Heart” feels more delicate, but no less poignant. Through it all, her voice carries the weight of experience—never flashy, always true.

Just Like That… peaked modestly at number 44 on the Billboard 200, but it never needed chart-topping numbers to leave its mark. As AllMusic’s Stephen Thomas Erlewine noted, it “slowly works its way into the subconscious,” a record that rewards patience with depth. It’s Raitt doing what she’s always done best—cutting through the noise with grace, grit, and a guitar in hand.
