Idles’ second studio album, Joy as an Act of Resistance, solidified their status as one of Britain’s most vital rock bands. It was released on 31 August 2018. Following the critical success of their debut, Brutalism, this album dives deep into the tumultuous waters of lead singer Joe Talbot’s past, tackling themes of toxic masculinity, self-love, immigration, and class through a lens of cathartic rage and urgent vulnerability.

Inspired by Toi Derricotte’s 2008 poem of a similar title, the album reflects a raw honesty. Talbot explains that it was a conscious effort to embrace vulnerability, a brave step in a world that often discourages it. The sound is as unyielding as the message, produced by Paul Frazer (known as “SPACE”) and mixed by Adam Greenspan and Nick Launay, bringing the explosive energy of their live performances into the studio.

The album features standout tracks like “Danny Nedelko,” an anthem of friendship and community, and “Never Fight a Man with a Perm,” which juxtaposes humour with pointed critique. It also showcases a poignant cover of Solomon Burke’s “Cry To Me,” further emphasising the emotional depth of the collection. The haunting track “June” offers an intimate glimpse into Talbot’s grief following the loss of his daughter, blending personal sorrow with wider social commentary.

Upon release, Joy as an Act of Resistance was met with widespread acclaim, peaking at number 5 on the UK Albums Chart. Critics hailed it as an instant classic; NME awarded it five stars, while The Guardian described it as “11 songs of focused, cathartic rage.” The album also earned accolades from various publications, consistently landing on year-end lists as one of the best albums of 2018.

To support the record, Idles embarked on a worldwide tour, sharing their message of unity and love across Japan, North America, and Europe. Their commitment to social issues extended beyond music, as demonstrated by an art exhibition in London that raised funds for the charity Samaritans, reinforcing the album’s themes of community and support.

Joy as an Act of Resistance is more than just an album; it’s a rallying cry for those grappling with personal and societal struggles. Idles channel their collective anger and vulnerability into a powerful sonic experience, proving that in the face of adversity, joy can indeed be an act of resistance. This is an album that wears its heart on its sleeve, broken but still beating, reminding us of the strength found in both vulnerability and solidarity.
