“Is This It” marks the debut studio album of American rock band, The Strokes, released on 30 July 2001, in Australia, with international distribution by RCA Records and UK release handled by Rough Trade Records. Recorded at Transporterraum in New York City during March and April 2001 with producer Gordon Raphael, the album aimed for a raw, live sound, building upon their earlier EP “The Modern Age.” Lead singer Julian Casablancas delved into urban youth themes in his songwriting.

Preceding its release, The Strokes embarked on a promotional world tour. Initially released in Australia on 30 July, the album followed in Japan on 22 August and the UK on 27 August. However, the US release faced delays and alterations following the September 11 attacks, pushing its debut to 9 October. The album’s US cover art was changed due to its perceived explicit nature.

Featuring singles like “Hard to Explain,” “Last Nite,” and “Someday,” the album received widespread acclaim for its twin-guitar interplay and pop-influenced sound. It peaked at number 33 on the US Billboard 200 and number two on the UK Albums Chart, attaining platinum status in various countries. Critically praised for its charisma and rhythmic qualities reminiscent of 1970s garage rock, “Is This It” is regarded as a pivotal moment in post-millennium guitar music, appearing in numerous “best of” lists.

In terms of background, The Strokes formed in 1998, influenced by artists like Bob Marley, The Velvet Underground, and Jane’s Addiction. They gained traction in 2000 after catching the attention of talent booker Ryan Gentles and released an EP titled “The Modern Age.” Following a sold-out UK tour, they signed with RCA Records and began recording with Gordon Raphael after initial sessions with Gil Norton proved unsatisfactory.

Recording at Transporterraum, The Strokes aimed for a live sound, with Raphael’s industrial music background shaping the album’s production. The band’s gritty sound, characterised by simple arrangements and raw efficiency, emerged over six weeks of recording. The album’s lyrical themes explored urban youth life, while musically, it blended garage rock, indie rock, and post-punk revival influences.

The album’s cover art, featuring a suggestive photograph by Colin Lane, sparked controversy and underwent alterations for the US release. Promotion included tours and live performances, with singles like “Hard to Explain,” “Last Nite,” and “Someday” gaining traction. “Is This It” garnered critical acclaim, achieving commercial success and leaving a lasting impact on guitar music in the early 2000s, influencing bands like Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon. It has since been widely recognised as one of the most influential albums of its era, receiving numerous accolades.
