In Time captures R.E.M. at their most panoramic — tracing the arc of a band that went from jangly college-rock darlings to one of the most quietly subversive stadium acts of their era. Spanning the Warner Bros. years from Green (1988) through Reveal (2001), it’s less a tidy greatest hits package and more a portrait of evolution: from the politicised shimmer of “Orange Crush” to the aching introspection of “Everybody Hurts” and the widescreen melancholy of “Nightswimming.”

The sequencing feels deliberate, flowing like a mixtape made by the band themselves — which, in a sense, it was. Michael Stipe’s surreal poetry finds new context when juxtaposed across decades, and Peter Buck’s chiming guitars seem to age like weathered silver: cleaner, brighter, but still carrying grit.

Two new songs — “Bad Day” and “Animal” — prove R.E.M. still had teeth. “Bad Day,” an early outtake retooled with post-9/11 bite, feels eerily relevant, while “Animal” snarls with a lean, cinematic urgency. Meanwhile, soundtrack standouts like “All the Right Friends” and “The Great Beyond” showcase their ability to move between intimacy and grandeur without ever losing their moral core.

Perhaps the most telling detail is what’s missing: “Shiny Happy People.” Its deliberate omission says everything about R.E.M.’s self-image — a band more comfortable in shades of grey than in fluorescent gloss.

Two decades later, In Time stands as a map of a group that never stopped changing shape. It’s a love letter to craft, conviction, and the art of staying human while the world gets louder.
