Released on 6 September 2013, If You Wait is the stunning debut studio album from English indie pop trio London Grammar, introduced by their unique blend of haunting melodies and introspective lyrics. The album quickly made waves, debuting at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, thanks to first-week sales of 33,130 copies, and boasts an impressive seven singles, including “Metal & Dust,” “Wasting My Young Years,” and “Strong.”

The journey to If You Wait began in early 2012 when the band signed with Ministry of Sound and Big Life Management, embarking on recording sessions that would shape their signature sound. Initially working with Cam Blackwood, they eventually teamed up with Tim Bran and Roy Kerr, whose production finesse helped crystallise the ethereal quality of the music. Vocalist Hannah Reid praised their collaboration, highlighting how Bran’s expertise in capturing her voice and the instrumentation brought the songs to life.

At its core, If You Wait is deeply personal, with Reid’s lyrics reflecting her turbulent teenage years, leading The Guardian to dub it “the first quarter-life-crisis album.” This emotional depth resonates throughout the tracks, making it both relatable and impactful.

Critically, the album received a warm reception, earning an average score of 75 on Metacritic from 19 reviews. Andy Gill of The Independent noted the production’s exquisite craftsmanship, describing it as “beautifully sketched to evoke the crepuscular intimacies of the songs.” Reid’s vocals, often characterised as “defining and soulful,” drew comparisons to the likes of Florence Welch and Annie Lennox, with Clash and Drowned in Sound celebrating her emotive delivery and folky undertones.

Benji Taylor of Pretty Much Amazing captured the essence of If You Wait, calling it “an enthralling, stunning, deeply emotive album that perfectly marries understated electronica to sublime vocals and melodies.” He likened Reid’s voice to an otherworldly presence, suggesting she crafted her art amidst the ethereal landscapes of fantasy.

Commercially, If You Wait proved to be a success, selling over 642,000 copies in the UK by June 2017, and peaking at No. 91 on the US Billboard 200. The album remains a timeless collection of songs that skillfully blend introspection with sonic elegance, firmly establishing London Grammar as a defining force in the indie pop landscape.
