On I’d Like to See You Again, A Certain Ratio continued to blur the lines between post-punk angularity and funk-fuelled grooves. Released in 1982 on Factory Records, the band’s fourth studio album swapped some of their earlier edge for a cleaner, more spacious sound — and while that shift divided critics, it cemented their place as one of the most distinctive voices of the era.
The absence of vocalist Martha Tilson is keenly felt; where previous records thrived on experimental unpredictability, here there’s a sense of restraint. Yet in that space, A Certain Ratio craft something no less compelling: taut rhythms, brittle guitar lines, and hypnotic bass work that still pulse with dancefloor intent.
Commercially, the album made its mark, spending twelve weeks on the UK Independent Albums Chart and peaking at number two — a testament to its quiet staying power. And though opinions were mixed at the time, I’d Like to See You Again has aged gracefully. Record Collector called it “timeless… ready for a first date with a new generation,” and they’re not wrong. Its minimalism and groove feel as fresh now as they did in 1982.
