I Hear You

I Hear You is the debut album by South Korean DJ and singer Peggy Gou, released on 7 June 2024 through XL Recordings. The album features the singles “I Go,” “(It Goes Like) Nanana,” “I Believe in Love Again” with Lenny Kravitz, and “1+1=11.” It also includes a collaboration with Villano Antillano.

Gou described I Hear You as more than just her debut album, reflecting countless hours of dedication and a quest to create something timeless. The album draws influence from 1990s house music.

The single “1+1=11” was released alongside the album announcement in April 2024, representing the theme of “togetherness.” The video for “1+1=11” was created in collaboration with Icelandic–Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, who also designed the angled mirrors worn by Gou on the cover and contributed his poem “Your Planet Seen from Within” to the first track, “Your Art.”

The album’s lead single was “(It Goes Like) Nanana,” followed by “I Believe in Love Again,” featuring Lenny Kravitz, “1+1=11,” and “Lobster Telephone” in May 2024. The album also includes Gou’s 2021 single “I Go.”

I Hear You received a Metacritic score of 73 out of 100, indicating generally favourable reviews. Stereogum praised the album as a standout work, noting its energetic tracks and its evolution from Gou’s previous releases. NME observed that while the album’s momentum initially stalls, it ultimately offers a refreshing experience akin to discovering dance music anew.

The Line of Best Fit praised Gou for her unique approach and future potential in dance music. Exclaim! highlighted Gou’s versatility and described the album as a dynamic balance of familiarity and freshness. AllMusic noted that the album captures Gou’s musical evolution and eclectic influences, while Pitchfork acknowledged the album’s nostalgic house music elements, suggesting a focus on enjoyment over grand concepts.
