Heathen Chemistry, the fifth studio album by the English rock band Oasis, marked a transitional phase for the group. Released on July 1, 2002, via Big Brother Recordings, it introduced guitarist Gem Archer and bassist Andy Bell, who joined the band post the completion of their previous album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. Notably, it was the final album featuring drummer Alan White, who departed in 2004 due to Noel Gallagher citing his lack of commitment.

Recording sessions for Heathen Chemistry spanned from 2001 to early 2002, signifying a departure from the usual songwriting contributions, with Liam Gallagher, Andy Bell, and Gem Archer contributing tracks. While most instrumental work was completed by late 2001, Noel Gallagher expressed frustration at delays caused by Liam’s reluctance to record vocal parts. Despite these setbacks, Noel considered the album their second best at the time, following their debut Definitely Maybe.

The album’s title, “Heathen Chemistry,” was inspired by a T-shirt Noel purchased in Ibiza featuring the logo “The Society of Heathen Chemists.” The first single, “The Hindu Times,” derived its name from a T-shirt logo Noel saw during a GQ photoshoot.

Heathen Chemistry faced challenges before its official release, with an internet leak surfacing three months early. Despite this, the commercially released album had slight differences in tracks “Little by Little” and “Better Man.” The latter’s hidden track, “The Cage,” resulted in a 38-minute length, with variations for the Japanese and digital versions.

Certified triple platinum in the UK and selling 154,000 copies in the US, the album reached number one in the UK but entered the US charts at number 23. It produced four successful singles: “The Hindu Times,” “Stop Crying Your Heart Out,” “Little By Little/She Is Love,” and “Songbird.”
