There is a quiet kind of ambition at the heart of Gregory Alan Isakov with the Colorado Symphony. Not the kind that demands attention, but the kind that slowly unfolds, revealing itself in the spaces between notes, in the breath of a string section swelling behind a familiar lyric.

Recorded between Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver and Starling Farm in Boulder, the album reimagines eleven songs drawn from Isakov’s earlier catalogue, including The Weatherman, This Empty Northern Hemisphere, and That Sea, the Gambler. There is also “Liars”, written by Ron Scott, which anchors the project with a sense of newness amid the retrospective lens.

What emerges is less a greatest hits collection and more a reframing. These songs, already defined by their intimacy, are expanded rather than overwhelmed. The arrangements by Tom Hagerman and Jay Clifford, conducted by Scott O’Neil, give Isakov’s hushed delivery a wider emotional canvas. Where once there was solitude, now there is scale. Where there was fragility, now there is weight.

“Big Black Car” drifts with a cinematic patience, its slow build lending new gravity to a song already steeped in longing. “The Stable Song” and “Amsterdam” benefit from the orchestral lift, their melodies stretching further without losing their core. Even the more understated moments, like “If I Go, I’m Goin”, feel subtly transformed, as if the room itself has grown larger around them.

Critically, the album arrived to immediate acclaim. NPR highlighted “Liars” as a “symphony of sound”, and it is an apt description. This is music that leans into atmosphere without abandoning clarity, where every swell and silence feels considered.

Yet what makes the record resonate is not the orchestra itself, but the restraint in how it is used. Isakov never competes with the symphony. Instead, he lets it orbit his voice, expanding the emotional reach of songs that were already quietly devastating.

In that sense, Gregory Alan Isakov with the Colorado Symphony is not a reinvention, but a deepening. A reminder that sometimes the most powerful transformations are the ones that don’t announce themselves at all.
