After a few years of sonic experimentation, Bush’s fourth studio album Golden State (2001) marks a triumphant return to the band’s core sound. Following the raw intensity of Razorblade Suitcase (1996) and the electronic-tinged The Science of Things (1999), Golden State captures the essence of what made their 1994 debut Sixteen Stone so iconic. It’s a welcome return to a more direct, guitar-driven style and serves as the last album to feature founding members Nigel Pulsford and Dave Parsons before their departure. The album also holds the distinction of being Bush’s last release before their ten-year hiatus, until The Sea of Memories arrived in 2011.

At its heart, Golden State is an album deeply connected to the personal experiences of frontman Gavin Rossdale, who took inspiration from the Golden State Freeway, which he often drove home on. The title itself reflects the album’s optimistic tone—Rossdale sought to capture a feeling of warmth and positivity, something that marked a shift from the darker themes of earlier works. Even with its brighter energy, however, the album still retains the raw power and defiance that has become synonymous with the band.

The process behind the album was a return to basics for the band—after five weeks of intense rehearsals, they recorded Golden State with a stripped-down, live-sounding approach. Gone were the electronic flourishes of The Science of Things, replaced with a bold, guitar-driven sound that brought them back to their roots. The result is a record that feels refreshingly direct, yet expansive in its emotional range.

Songs like The People That We Love are anthemic in spirit, capturing the album’s central message of resilience and overcoming adversity. Initially titled Speed Kills, the song’s name change following the September 11 attacks reflected the band’s desire to offer something healing and hopeful in a time of tragedy. The track’s infectious energy and uplifting lyrics are a testament to the band’s ability to turn personal turmoil into a rallying cry for strength.

Golden State also introduces us to tracks like Headful of Ghosts, where Rossdale’s evocative lyrics are delivered with the same gritty intensity that made songs like Glycerine so memorable. His unmistakable rasp gives the album a sense of urgency, while the melodies, though familiar, feel timeless and undeniably potent.

Critical reception was positive. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic praised the band’s ability to return to their signature sound, calling the album “charmingly retro” while still feeling fresh. Kerrang! even declared it Bush’s best album yet, praising its dynamic energy and cohesion. While some critics, like Rolling Stone, felt the album didn’t quite reach the heights of earlier hits, many appreciated the album’s refreshing power and emotional depth.

In the UK, the single Inflatable gained traction, further cementing the album’s appeal. With its catchy hooks and infectious energy, Golden State showed Bush at their most confident, embracing their roots while pushing forward with a renewed sense of purpose.
