Brand New
After the firebrand fury of Generation Terrorists, Manic Street Preachers’ second album arrived steeped in swagger, riffs and reflection. Released on 21 June 1993 through Columbia Records, Gold Against the Soul marked a deliberate step away from the politicised manifesto of their debut, diving instead into the murkier waters of melancholy, disillusionment and personal despair.
Produced by Dave Eringa, the record trades punk zeal for a glossy, muscular sound that flirts with hard rock, glam and grunge in equal measure. The band have since described it as their most unfocused era, but that lack of restraint gives the album a strange, bruised energy. Tracks like From Despair to Where and La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh) showcase James Dean Bradfield’s soaring vocals against huge, harmonised guitars and crashing drums, while Roses in the Hospital finds the band leaning into a funky, arena-ready groove. It’s polished, indulgent, and entirely of its time — but still undeniably powerful.
Upon release, reactions were mixed. NME called it “confusing”, while Select hailed it as a “mammoth development”. Q found it “superficially competent”, yet Mojo later championed its ambition, and Uncut awarded it 8/10 in retrospect. Over time, history has softened toward Gold Against the Soul. What once seemed a misstep now feels like an essential bridge between the bombast of Generation Terrorists and the brutal intensity of The Holy Bible.
The 2020 deluxe reissue — complete with demos, B-sides and photographs from Mitch Ikeda — reframed it as a bold, transitional statement: flawed, yes, but full of conviction. Beneath the radio sheen lies a band wrestling with their own contradictions, and that tension makes Gold Against the Soul one of the Manics’ most intriguing and human records.
