John Legend’s Get Lifted, released on 28 December 2004, marked the debut of one of contemporary R&B’s most celebrated voices. With production handled by Kanye West, who also served as executive producer, the album was a statement of intention, blending neo-soul and classic R&B with a modern twist. The album’s sound benefits from a talented group of collaborators, including Dave Tozer, will.i.am, and Devo Springsteen, and features guest appearances from West himself, Snoop Dogg, and Miri Ben-Ari.
At the time of release, Get Lifted made an immediate impact, debuting at number seven on the US Billboard 200 and later peaking at number four. Legend’s breakout hit, Ordinary People, remains the album’s defining moment. Released as the second single, the song not only climbed the charts — peaking at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 — but also went on to define his career. It reached number four on the UK Singles Chart and topped the UK R&B chart, earning Legend his first Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 2006.
The album’s blend of emotional depth and polished production resonated with critics. Spin gave the album an A−, praising Legend’s ability to craft subtle, yet emotionally resonant tracks, while The Guardian described it as “a real gem,” citing his impressive vocal delivery. His nuanced approach to soul music was also lauded by Pitchfork, which awarded Get Lifted an 8.8/10 rating. While the album sometimes veers into the slick territory of modern R&B, its sincerity and authenticity shine through, with Legend’s soulful voice and the high-profile production team bringing the material to life.
But Get Lifted isn’t solely about Ordinary People. The opening track, Used to Love U, sets the tone with its upbeat tempo and catchy hooks, though it didn’t achieve the same commercial success, peaking at number 74 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Meanwhile, the third single, Number One, although a lesser chart performer, remains a fan favourite for its laid-back vibe. The final single, So High, was released in December 2005 but didn’t chart as highly in the US, although it made a mark on the UK’s Bubbling Under Hot 100.
On the commercial front, Get Lifted went on to sell over 2.1 million copies in the United States, earning double platinum status by 2020. Internationally, the album was also well-received, cementing Legend’s place as a dominant force in the R&B scene. Beyond its commercial success, Get Lifted also won the Grammy for Best R&B Album, solidifying John Legend as an artist to watch.
Ultimately, Get Lifted is more than just a debut album. It’s a polished, mature statement from an artist with a knack for blending the old with the new, and a promise of greater things to come.
