Released on 14 September 2004, Funeral announced Arcade Fire with astonishing confidence. Recorded largely at Montreal’s Hotel2Tango, the band’s debut transforms grief, change and the fading innocence of childhood into something expansive, communal and fiercely alive.

The album’s first half, often described as the “Neighborhood” suite, imagines a town caught in a winter power cut, drawing on personal experience of the 1998 North American ice storm. Across “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)”, “Neighborhood #2 (Laïka)” and “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)”, private memories grow into grand, dramatic songs filled with urgency, movement and emotional weight.

That intensity continues through “Rebellion (Lies)” and “Wake Up”, where indie rock, chamber pop and orchestral ambition meet in arrangements that feel both intimate and enormous. The album’s analogue recording gives its many layers a warmth and immediacy, while its recurring images of death and transition are balanced by a striking sense of hope.

Funeral quickly became a critical and commercial breakthrough, earning a Grammy nomination and appearing near the top of countless year-end and decade-end lists. Yet its reputation rests less on acclaim than on the force of the music itself.
