In the aftershock of ‘Funky Worm’, as the Ohio Players stepped away from Westbound and Walter ‘Junie’ Morrison struck out alone, Freeze emerges as something stranger, looser and far more personal than the hits he left behind. Where his former band sharpened funk into something chart-ready, Junie leans into its edges, crafting a record that feels both playful and quietly radical.

Recorded at Ardent Studio in Memphis, Freeze is the sound of total control. Junie handles everything, moving from rhythm section to synthesiser with restless intent, building tracks that feel stitched together by instinct rather than formula. There is a looseness to it, but never a lack of purpose. Each song feels lived-in, shaped by a musician more interested in exploration than polish.

That sense of freedom runs throughout. ‘Not As Good As You Should’ glides with a kind of understated confidence, while ‘Granny’s Funky Rolls Royce’ veers into something more unruly, reviving the humour and character work that defined ‘Funky Worm’. It is this balance, between the sublime and the absurd, that gives Freeze its identity. Junie refuses to separate musicianship from personality, and the result is funk that feels human, unpredictable and slightly unhinged in the best way.

If the album never chased the same commercial heights as his previous work, it hardly feels like a compromise. Freeze is less concerned with immediacy and more with atmosphere, stretching ideas just far enough to feel ahead of its time. The use of synthesisers, still fresh territory in the mid-1970s, adds a futuristic sheen without losing the grit of the groove. It is adventurous without being self-conscious.

In hindsight, the record sits comfortably alongside Junie’s later move into Funkadelic, where he would help shape ‘One Nation Under A Groove’ and take that same restless energy onto a global stage. His influence stretches further still, echoed in later generations who recognised the elasticity of his sound, from hip-hop producers to artists who found space in his eccentricity.

This reissue, presented in a facsimile of its original cover and available again for the first time, restores Freeze to where it belongs. Not as a footnote to a more famous band, but as a singular statement.

It remains one of funk’s great auteur records. Strange, salacious and quietly forward-thinking, Freeze still sounds as inventive and unfiltered as it must have in 1975.
