Cut directly from the source, this audiophile series leaned on original first-generation master tapes, with high-definition transfers completed at Abbey Road Studios. The resulting master files, including meticulous 3-to-2 mixes for the stereo titles, were produced by Thomas Fine, son of the original producer and recording engineer behind much of the Mercury Living Presence catalogue.

What emerged was mid-century modern music captured at its most vivid: wide dynamic range, striking orchestral depth, and a physical sense of space that still feels astonishingly present. Wayne Peterson’s piece was commissioned specifically for Antal Dorati’s Minneapolis orchestra, receiving both its premiere performance and first recording in the same breath. Ernest Bloch was recorded on 17 April 1960, Peterson on 21 April 1959, with both sessions taking place at Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis.

The technical approach was as pure as it was forward-thinking. Using just three Schoeps M201 microphones, these recordings preserved clarity, balance and natural resonance, allowing the music to breathe with remarkable realism. Decades on, they remain a powerful reminder of how thoughtful engineering and musical ambition once met at full force.
