Since 2010’s “Black Sands,” Bonobo’s Si Green has been masterfully blending electronic methods with non-electronic music, reaching a pinnacle with “Fragments.” Like Cinematic Orchestra or Caribou, a Bonobo album promises a familiar yet unpredictable journey. “Fragments” is no exception, weaving harps, strings, skittery breaks, deep house, and haunting choral samples into its sonic tapestry.

Green’s talent for finding vocalists that complement his music shines once again, with Jordan Rakei impressing on “Shadows” and poet Jamila Woods delivering the standout track, “Tides.” This song seamlessly blends acoustic and electronic elements, showcasing Bonobo’s ability to craft swooning beauty.

While “Fragments” may lack the dissonance and psychedelic experimentation of artists like Jon Hopkins or Four Tet, it offers a comforting familiarity that some may find too safe. Nevertheless, it’s a brilliant and wondrous work, perfectly suited for those fantasy-filled afterparties where aging ravers dream of retiring to a facility where mellow bangers play through the intercom.
