Fortitude

Released on 30 April 2021, Gojira’s Fortitude is a shining milestone in modern metal, effortlessly blending technical prowess with profound emotion. Produced by frontman Joe Duplantier and mixed by the legendary Andy Wallace, the album marks the French quartet’s seventh studio outing, recorded at their New York-based Silver Cord Studio. Despite delays caused by the pandemic, Fortitude emerged as a cohesive and forward-thinking project, retaining Gojira’s signature heaviness while embracing new sonic territories.

Building on the atmospheric strides of Magma, Fortitude is both a return to the band’s roots and a bold leap forward. Tracks like “Amazonia” and “Born for One Thing” deliver bone-rattling riffs and polyrhythmic complexity, while venturing into fresh, melodic territory with anthemic choruses and rich textures. The album’s lighter, more accessible tones reflect the band’s desire to inspire resilience and hope, in contrast to the grief-laden themes of their earlier work.

Thematically, Fortitude calls for collective action and inner strength, weaving environmental activism into its lyrics with tracks like “Amazonia,” which critiques the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. Meanwhile, “The Chant” showcases Gojira’s evolving sound, blending Americana-inspired melodies with chain-gang blues—a daring move that pays off brilliantly.

Critics were unanimous in their praise. Metal Hammer and Revolver crowned Fortitude the best album of 2021, and Rolling Stone listed it among the year’s top metal releases. Commercially, the record soared, debuting at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and topping rock and metal charts worldwide.

With Fortitude, Gojira solidify their place as modern metal titans. The album doesn’t merely expand their sonic palette—it redefines the boundaries of heavy music with artistry and purpose. It’s a rallying cry for courage and change, wrapped in an electrifying, genre-defying package.
