Returning to First Word with a sequel to his acclaimed Examples, London producer Eric Lau once again demonstrates why he is regarded as one of modern music’s most gifted beat-makers. Examples Volume Two is less a conventional album than an expansive sketchbook, gathering 28 instrumentals that effortlessly blur the boundaries between hip hop, jazz, funk, soul and Brazilian rhythms.

Every piece feels like a carefully crafted idea brought vividly to life. Lau’s meticulous ear for detail gives the collection remarkable warmth and clarity, allowing subtle grooves, rich harmonies and beautifully textured arrangements to unfold naturally. Rather than demanding attention, these instrumentals invite repeated listening, revealing fresh details with every return.

The album also reflects the collaborative world Lau inhabits. Contributions from long-time associate Kaidi Tatham add further colour, while moments such as “Jeff’s Piano”, built around an impromptu recording of Kaidi teaching Masego at DJ Jazzy Jeff’s studio, capture the spontaneity and musical camaraderie that underpin the project. It is a reminder that some of the most memorable ideas emerge from simply being in the room with exceptional musicians.
