Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge stands as the second studio album by the American rock band Mudhoney, recorded in 1991. During this period, the band contemplated signing with a major record label but ultimately opted to release the album on Sub Pop, contributing significantly to Sub Pop’s viability by shipping 50,000 copies on its original release.

Guitarist Steve Turner holds a special regard for the album, stating it’s his “favorite Mudhoney album as a whole.” The production, undertaken on low-quality tape via an 8-track desk, reflects a deliberate choice. The album’s title is a nod to a mnemonic used by music students for remembering notes (EGBDF) on the lines of the treble clef.

In terms of critical reception, Entertainment Weekly described the Mudhoney sound as a blend of the heaviest Black Sabbath heavy metal, but sped up with added humour. Trouser Press acknowledged Conrad Uno’s dry 8-track production, sharpening Mudhoney’s garage-rock edge. The Spin Alternative Record Guide found the album “charming,” connecting Mudhoney more directly to ’60s garage with a revitalised sense of hooks.

The album’s significance is highlighted by its inclusion, alongside the band’s debut EP Superfuzz Bigmuff, in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Reviewer Jason Chow hailed it as “a classic album, one of the best of the genre.” The decision to remain with Sub Pop rather than signing with a major label proved pivotal, and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge played a crucial role in maintaining Sub Pop’s business.
