Rather than sitting comfortably behind the boards, Vancouver duo Potatohead People stepped fully into view on their fourth album, Eat Your Heart Out, marking a confident return to Bastard Jazz. Long admired for their immaculate, musical production touch, Nick Wisdom and AstroLogical used this record to widen the frame: not just producers, but vocalists, songwriters and players shaping the album from the inside out.

At its core, Eat Your Heart Out circled one endlessly renewable subject: love, in all its contradictory forms. Infatuation and absence, stability and distance, the comfort of connection and the ache when it slips away – each track explored a different angle, with those emotions threaded as much through the grooves as the lyrics. The result felt cohesive without ever sounding boxed in, an album driven by feeling rather than concept for concept’s sake.

Sonically, it marked a clear step forward. Familiar Potatohead warmth remained, but the palette stretched wider than before, moving effortlessly between hip-hop, soul, funk and electronic textures. The guest list reflected that openness. Redman sounded right at home over the Rhodes-led swing of “Last Nite”, while Shafiq Husayn glided through the slow-burn analogue funk of “Angelwings”, joined by Ivan Ave’s sharp second verse. Diamond Cafe delivered a standout moment on “Paradise”, channelling early-80s digital seduction somewhere between Sade, El DeBarge and Prefab Sprout.

Elsewhere, long-time collaborators and kindred spirits filled out the emotional arc. Abstract Rude and T3 joined Kapok on the swirling, string-laced “Come Home”, while appearances from Frank Nitt, Kendra Dias, Moka Only and Reggie B added further depth without ever tipping into overload. Each voice felt chosen for tone and feeling, not just name recognition.

Taken as a whole, Eat Your Heart Out captured Potatohead People at their most assured: emotionally direct, musically expansive, and clearly enjoying the freedom of stepping fully into the spotlight on their own terms.
