Dub from the Roots belongs to the period when the mixing desk was becoming an instrument in its own right. King Tubby did not need to write a new melody or assemble a band in front of microphones to transform a piece of music. Working from multitrack tapes supplied by producers, he could strip a reggae recording down to bass and drums, allow a horn or vocal phrase to flash briefly into view, then send the whole thing spinning into echo and space. The mix itself became the performance.

Released in 1974 in collaboration with producer Bunny Lee, Dub from the Roots is listed by Wikipedia among the earliest albums of Tubby’s dub mixes. That timing matters. Tubby’s small studio was not equipped to record session musicians; instead he worked with existing masters on a custom-built 12-channel MCI mixing desk. By manipulating levels, EQ and the relationships between instrumental parts, he could turn recognisable songs into radically different objects, often foregrounding the weight of bass and drums while leaving only fragments of the original arrangement intact.

This was an extension of sound-system culture, where selectors had long used equalisation to emphasise particular elements of records, but Tubby pushed the logic much further. On Dub from the Roots, the pleasure comes from negative space as much as sound. Instruments disappear just when the ear expects them to continue. Rhythms suddenly feel enormous because everything around them has been removed. Echo turns a short gesture into architecture. These are not simply instrumental versions; they are reorganisations of attention.

Tubby’s influence on recording culture is difficult to separate from the basic vocabulary of modern remixing, but the album does not need historical importance to justify itself. It remains exciting because the mixes feel playful and physical. Each intervention changes how the groove is perceived, and silence becomes as active as the notes. Dub from the Roots offers one of the clearest ways into Tubby’s art: familiar reggae materials made strange, spacious and newly alive by somebody treating the studio as a place where composition could continue after the musicians had gone home.
