“Dookie” stands as the third studio album and major-label debut by American rock band Green Day, released on 1 February 1994, through Reprise Records. The album, recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, in late summer 1993, marked the band’s collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo. Led by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, its lyrical themes delve into personal experiences, including boredom, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality.

Upon its release, “Dookie” injected a livelier, more melodic rock sound into the mainstream music scene, diverging from the prevailing grunge trend. Its impact was profound, catapulting Green Day to global recognition and solidifying punk rock’s popularity in mainstream culture. The album received critical acclaim, albeit facing criticism from some early fans who perceived the band’s departure from their independent label, Lookout! Records, as a sellout move.

“Dookie” earned a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album in 1995 and soared to the top of charts worldwide. It achieved Diamond certification from the RIAA and has sold over 20 million copies globally, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Recognised as one of the defining albums of the 1990s and a cornerstone of punk rock and pop-punk genres, “Dookie” has garnered numerous accolades, including placement on Rolling Stone’s lists of the greatest albums of all time.

The album’s recording journey was marked by newfound resources and experimentation, culminating in a three-week session at Fantasy Studios. Despite initial anxiety, the band embraced the opportunity to refine their sound, with Armstrong recording most of his vocals in just two days. The album underwent remixing to achieve the desired effect, resulting in a polished yet raw production.

“Dookie” features notable tracks like “Longview,” “Basket Case,” and a re-recorded version of “Welcome to Paradise.” While the band faced backlash from some quarters for their transition to a major label, their enduring impact on punk rock and mainstream music is undeniable. In 2024, “Dookie” was honoured with preservation in the United States National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
