“Definitely Maybe” represents the debut studio album by the legendary English rock band Oasis, which was released on 29th August 1994 through Creation Records. The album’s birthplace was Monnow Valley Studio, near Rockfield. However, the album’s production journey was marked by turbulence. Initially, it was under the stewardship of producer Dave Batchelor, but dissatisfaction with the early sessions led to his removal. A fresh start ensued as the band re-recorded the album at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall, with Noel Gallagher and Mark Coyle co-producing. The final touch was added by engineer and producer Owen Morris, who took charge of the album’s mixing at Johnny Marr’s studio in Manchester.

“Definitely Maybe” quickly asserted its presence, particularly in the United Kingdom. It rode the momentum generated by earlier hit singles like “Supersonic,” “Shakermaker,” and the UK top-ten sensation “Live Forever,” which also gained prominence on US Rock Airplay charts. The album swiftly ascended to the top spot in the UK Albums Chart, setting a record as the fastest-selling debut album in British music history at that time. This outstanding performance earned the album an 8× platinum certification by the BPI, signifying sales exceeding 2.4 million units. It also achieved platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the United States. Globally, the album recorded sales exceeding 8.5 million copies, solidifying Oasis’s status as a worldwide musical phenomenon.

Critics widely celebrated “Definitely Maybe,” attributing to it a dual triumph – commercial and critical. The album played a crucial role in revitalizing British pop music in the 1990s. It earned acclaim for its positive themes, a stark contrast to the prevailing negativity found in much of the contemporary grunge music landscape. Furthermore, it is recognized as a seminal work within the Britpop movement and has consistently appeared on lists of the greatest albums of all time.

Some notable accolades include:

  • In 2006, NME conducted a readers’ poll in which “Definitely Maybe” was voted the greatest album of all time.
  • In 2015, Spin included the album in their list of “The 300 Best Albums of 1985–2014.”
  • In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked the album at No. 217 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
