Released on 17 July 2015, Currents is the third studio album by Australian musical project Tame Impala, issued by Modular Recordings. In the United States it arrived via Interscope Records, in the United Kingdom via Fiction Records, with Caroline International handling other regions. As with the two albums before it, Kevin Parker wrote, recorded, performed and produced the entire thing, but here he pushed that control further: for the first time he mixed the music himself and recorded all instruments alone, with no collaborators.

That solitary process makes the album’s pivot feel even bolder. Where earlier Tame Impala leaned into psychedelic rock, Currents redirects its energy towards dance-oriented music, turning synthesisers into the main character and letting guitars act as supporting voices that answer, rather than lead. Parker wanted his music in dance clubs, in a more communal setting, and you can hear that ambition in the way these songs pulse and glide, engineered for movement even when the mood turns inward.

The record is thematically obsessed with personal transformation. Parker described it as following someone becoming “something else”, a deep psychological shift that many critics read as a romantic breakup. The cover, a visualisation of vortex shedding, reinforces that idea of unstoppable forces, emotional currents you can’t simply stand still against.

Its rollout was shaped by Parker’s perfectionism. Much of Currents was recorded at his home studio in Fremantle, and the work became an all-consuming routine that delayed the album’s release by two months. Lead single “Let It Happen” arrived as a free download on 10 March 2015, followed by “‘Cause I’m a Man”, “Eventually” and “The Less I Know the Better” as the album’s key singles. If the songwriting is about giving in to change, the production is about refusing to settle, from the obsessive vocal takes to the detailed synth palette, including the Roland Juno-106 and Sequential Circuits Pro-One, plus a Roland JV-1080 and Sequential Circuits Drumtraks.

Commercially, Currents became the project’s best charting release, debuting at number one in Australia, number three in the United Kingdom and number four in the United States. It is also the record that crystallised Parker’s auteur reputation into something more expansive: music built in isolation, designed to be shared.
