“Concrete and Gold” marks the ninth studio album from American rock band Foo Fighters, released on 15 September 2017, via Roswell and RCA Records. Produced alongside Greg Kurstin, it ventures into a fusion of hard rock and pop sensibilities, encapsulating Dave Grohl’s reflections on the future of the United States amidst the charged atmosphere of the 2016 elections and the presidency of Donald Trump. Grohl described the album’s thematic essence as a blend of “hope and desperation”.

Writing and recording commenced in late 2016 following Grohl’s recuperation from an injury sustained during the Sonic Highways World Tour. Despite initial challenges, Grohl crafted a set of twelve or thirteen song ideas before enlisting Kurstin, known for his pop music expertise. Recorded at EastWest Studios in Hollywood, California, the sessions led to collaborations with a diverse array of musicians, including Justin Timberlake, Paul McCartney, and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men. Notably, Rami Jaffee, the band’s long-time session and touring keyboardist, became an official member during this album.

Critically acclaimed, “Concrete and Gold” received praise for its expansive musical and lyrical scope, though some critics noted a perceived lack of musical deviation from the band’s previous works. Commercially, the album debuted atop the Billboard 200 and other national charts, propelled by singles like “Run” and “The Sky Is a Neighborhood,” both of which reached number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart. The band embarked on an eponymous headlining tour to support the album throughout 2017.

The album’s genesis emerged amidst various ideas, including a live studio recording at the Hollywood Bowl, though this was abandoned due to prior execution by PJ Harvey. Grohl’s injury during the Sonic Highways tour led to a hiatus, during which he initially planned to abstain from music for a year but resumed writing after six months, yielding the track “Run”.

The collaborative process with Kurstin, a departure from the band’s comfort zone, flourished at EastWest Studios, fostering interactions with fellow artists and resulting in high-profile collaborations. Grohl’s concerns about the future of the United States underpinned the album’s lyrical themes, influenced by the political climate surrounding Trump’s presidency.

“Concrete and Gold” was supported by two pre-release singles, “Run” and “The Sky Is a Neighborhood,” alongside promotional events like the “Cal Jam 17” festival and a subsequent joint tour with Weezer. A third single, “The Line,” was released in May 2018.
