Come Away with Me is Norah Jones’s debut studio album, released on 26 February 2002, through Blue Note Records. Recorded at Sorcerer Sound Studio in New York City and Allaire Studios in Shokan, New York, the album marked Jones’s entry into the music scene.
Achieving significant commercial success, Come Away with Me topped the US Billboard 200 chart and garnered two Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. It achieved Diamond certification from the RIAA on February 15, 2005, signifying shipments exceeding ten million copies in the United States alone. By 2016, global sales had surpassed 27 million copies, establishing it as one of the best-selling albums worldwide.
Musically, Come Away with Me is characterised by acoustic pop, enriched by the contributions of prominent jazz musicians such as Kevin Breit, Bill Frisell, and others. Jones’s interpretations range from Jesse Harris’s “Don’t Know Why” to classics like Hoagy Carmichael’s “The Nearness of You” and Hank Williams’s “Cold, Cold Heart,” blending elements of blues, jazz, folk, soul, and country.
The album’s initial reception was highly positive, with critics praising Jones’s vocal prowess and the album’s emotional depth. It holds an average score of 82 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating universal acclaim. Despite being released during a period of declining album sales, it steadily climbed the charts, peaking at number one on the Billboard 200 in January 2003, almost a year after its release.
Come Away with Me’s enduring popularity was underscored by its longevity on the Billboard 200, spending a total of 165 weeks on the chart. It was certified Diamond in 2005 and ranked as the eleventh best-selling album of the Nielsen SoundScan era by 2016. In Germany, the album also enjoyed substantial success, charting for 141 weeks and reaching five-times Gold certification.
Critically acclaimed and commercially successful, Come Away with Me remains a landmark in Norah Jones’s career, celebrated for its intimate sound and Jones’s compelling musicality.
