“Chaka” represents a significant milestone in Chaka Khan’s career as it marks her debut solo album, released on October 12, 1978, through the Warner Bros. Records label. Despite her success as the lead vocalist of Rufus, “Chaka” demonstrated Khan’s ability to stand out on her own with her powerful and dynamic vocals.
The album features two notable singles. The first, “I’m Every Woman”, became an anthem and one of Khan’s signature tunes. Written by Ashford & Simpson, the track topped the R&B charts and showcased Khan’s captivating vocals. Over the years, “I’m Every Woman” has been re-released, remixed, and covered numerous times, including Whitney Houston’s rendition for the soundtrack of “The Bodyguard,” which also featured guest vocals by Khan herself.
The second single from the album, “Life is a Dance – The Remix Project,” gained popularity, reaching the top ten in the UK in 1989. The album also includes the ballad “Roll Me Through The Rushes,” which received considerable airplay in 1979, and Khan’s cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Was Made To Love Her,” retitled “I Was Made to Love Him.”
