Brazilian songstress Céu has long been celebrated for her ability to transcend borders and blend influences, and her sixth studio album, Novela, is a testament to that legacy. Recorded live to tape at Los Angeles’ Linear Labs Studio, the album is an analogue masterpiece produced by Pupillo and Adrian Younge. It features a stellar cast of collaborators, including LadyBug Mecca, anaiis, Loren Oden, and Brazilian legend Marcos Valle, among others.

Opening with the cinematic “Raiou”, Céu and LadyBug Mecca pull listeners into a soul-stirring narrative filled with dramatic intensity. One of the album’s highlights, “Gerando na Alta”, pairs Céu with anaiis for a sultry exploration of sisterhood. Sung in both Portuguese and English, the track seamlessly weaves rich textures and harmonies. The spellbinding “Crushinho” follows, its cinematic strings and sparse drum grooves underscoring Céu’s emotionally charged delivery.

On “Into My Novela”, Céu teams up with Loren Oden and Jensine Benitez to craft a mid-tempo, drama-filled piece reminiscent of TV soap operas, yet grounded in real-life emotion. “Mucho Ôro” slows the pace with a tender ballad about love and self-expression, while “High na Cachu” offers a reggae-tinged bounce rich with descriptive lyrics.

The closing tracks, “Corp e Colo” and “Reescreve”, leave a lasting impression. The former, featuring Nando Reis and Kleber Lucas, channels retro cinematic scores and Motown soul, while the latter is a powerful commentary on Brazil’s turbulent history, delivered with thought-provoking depth.
