Capital Punishment

Released on 28 April 1998, Capital Punishment announced Big Pun as one of hip hop’s most formidable new voices. His debut, and the only studio album released during his lifetime, is an astonishing showcase of technical precision, breathless lyricism and undeniable charisma, establishing the Bronx MC as one of the era’s defining talents.

After making his breakthrough alongside fellow Bronx rapper Fat Joe, Big Pun quickly proved he was far more than a promising newcomer. Across Capital Punishment, his intricate multi-syllabic rhyme schemes and effortless flow take centre stage, delivered with a confidence that rarely lets up. Whether trading verses with Black Thought on “Super Lyrical”, going bar for bar with Fat Joe on the iconic “Twinz (Deep Cover ’98)”, or sharing the spotlight with Wyclef Jean, Noreaga, Prodigy, Inspectah Deck and Busta Rhymes, Pun consistently commands attention.

Commercially, the album became a landmark release. It reached number five on the Billboard 200, topped the Top R&B Albums chart and became the first solo album by a Latin rapper to achieve Platinum certification in the United States. Singles including “Still Not a Player”, “I’m Not a Player” and “You Came Up” helped introduce his music to a wider audience, while earning him a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 1999 Grammy Awards.

Beyond its commercial success, Capital Punishment has endured as a genuine hip hop classic. Packed with razor-sharp lyricism, heavyweight collaborations and unforgettable performances, the album remains a defining statement from an artist whose influence continues to resonate decades later. It is both a remarkable debut and a lasting reminder of the extraordinary talent Big Pun brought to rap.
