”Broken Machine” is the second studio album by the British rock band Nothing but Thieves, released on 8 September 2017 under RCA and Sony Music. Produced by Mike Crossey, the album received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for the band’s evolving style.

Roisin Oconnor of The Independent hailed the album as one of ‘the best rock albums of the year,’ emphasising its role in showcasing the band’s awareness of both their own development and global events. Varsity’s Sarah Taylor, awarding the album 4 out of 5 stars, noted the heightened anticipation before its release and stated that it ‘did not disappoint.’ She commended the band for pushing boundaries and further defining their style through varied music and lyricism.

Linda Köke from Genre Is Dead praised Nothing but Thieves for following in the footsteps of rock giants, lauding the album’s energy. While noting some experimentation, Köke awarded the album 4.5 out of 5 stars. However, Luke Nuttall of The Soundboard offered a more critical perspective. He described the album as having only ‘fragments’ of its predecessor’s strongest elements, with Conor Mason’s vocals doing most of the ‘heavy lifting.’ Nuttall criticised tracks like “Hell, Yeah” and “Afterlife,” deeming them ‘tolerable’ due to the band’s capabilities. He also expressed concerns about the production quality, considering it ‘lax’ compared to their debut. Despite some reservations, Nuttall acknowledged the album’s ‘nice ideas’ that could shape the band’s future.
