Bossanova

Pixies’ third studio album, “Bossanova,” was released on 13 August 1990, by English independent record label 4AD in the UK and by Elektra Records in the US. Notably, Elektra handled distribution in the US due to 4AD’s independent status.

Recorded between 1989 and 1990 across various studios including Cherokee in Hollywood and Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, the album features a blend of alternative rock, space rock, surf rock, and grunge elements. Produced by Gil Norton, “Bossanova” reached number 70 on the Billboard 200 and peaked at number three in the UK Albums Chart. Two singles, “Velouria” and “Dig for Fire,” were released, both charting on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the US.

Following the tour for their previous album, “Doolittle” (1989), Pixies relocated to Los Angeles to work on “Bossanova.” The band encountered challenges during the recording process, including technical issues at Cherokee Studios, prompting a shift to Master Control for continued production.

Composed by Black Francis, the album features a mix of studio-written and previously unreleased songs. Unlike their previous albums, fewer demo recordings were created, with several songs being composed directly in the studio.

Critically, “Bossanova” received positive reviews, particularly in the UK. Q Magazine praised Pixies for their innovative approach, while NME highlighted the album’s production reminiscent of their earlier works, combining garage grunge with strong melodies.

The album’s track listing includes songs like “Cecilia Ann,” “Velouria,” and “Is She Weird.” Personnel involved in the album’s production included Black Francis, Kim Deal, David Lovering, Joey Santiago, and additional musicians and technical staff.

“Bossanova” attained gold certifications in France and the UK. It was also listed in the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.”
