Bloody Tourists

Bloody Tourists captures 10cc in expansive, outward-looking form. Released in September 1978 and recorded at Strawberry Studios South in Dorking, the band’s sixth studio album builds on the renewed confidence of Deceptive Bends while broadening both sound and perspective. Produced by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, it is a record shaped by movement, colour and a sharpened sense of pop craft.

This was the first 10cc studio album to feature the band as a six-piece, a shift that brings added texture and flexibility. The expanded line-up allows space for contributions beyond the Stewart and Gouldman core, and for the first time the pair also wrote songs independently of one another. That variety feeds the album’s character, giving it a sense of range without diluting its identity.

The album’s defining moment is “Dreadlock Holiday”, a single that preceded the release and went on to top the charts in several countries, including the UK. Its relaxed, sunlit feel sits at the heart of the record’s appeal and helped drive Bloody Tourists to number three on the UK Albums Chart. Elsewhere, tracks such as “Reds in My Bed”, “For You and I” and “From Rochdale to Ocho Rios” reinforce the band’s gift for melody, atmosphere and finely judged hooks, with different singles tailored to different territories.

Visually, the album continues 10cc’s collaboration with Hipgnosis. The cover, featuring a map of Martinique being blown into someone’s face, reflects the album’s themes of travel and displacement, and introduces the now-familiar 10cc logo with a star inside the zero. It is playful, striking and perfectly in step with the music inside.

Bloody Tourists stands as a confident, cosmopolitan record. It blends pop sophistication with a lightness of touch, showing a band comfortable with change and adept at turning it into something inviting, memorable and enduring.
