Black Pudding is a collaborative album by Mark Lanegan and multi-instrumentalist Duke Garwood. Recorded by Justin Smith at Pink Duck Studios and mixed by Alain Johannes at 11AD Studios, it was released in the United Kingdom by Heavenly Recordings on 13 May 2013 and in the United States by Ipecac on 14 May 2013. The sole single from the album, “Cold Molly,” was released on 20 April 2013 as a Record Store Day exclusive.
Garwood, known for his work with the Orb, Wire, Wooden Wand, Sir Richard Bishop, and Kurt Vile, had previously collaborated with Lanegan during The Gutter Twins’ tour. Lanegan was introduced to Garwood’s music through Isobel Campbell, who gave him a copy of Garwood’s *Emerald Palace* during the recording sessions for Sunday at Devil Dirt. Lanegan was impressed by the album’s “beautiful, dark, and off-kilter music.” The two artists, recognising their creative synergy, began exchanging song ideas and eventually convened at Josh Homme’s Pink Duck studio in Burbank, California, in late 2012 to record Black Pudding. Lanegan has described the album as containing some of his favourite songs, including “Mescalito,” “Last Rung,” “Driver,” and “War Memorial.”
