There is a lovely contradiction at the centre of Beautiful Rewind: Kieran Hebden made an album steeped in electronic history while announcing it with a list of things he refused to do in the contemporary music business. No pre-orders, no promotional trailer, no album stream, no Spotify campaign, no chart strategy. The gesture was not simply contrarian. It suited a record that feels private, agile and stubbornly self-contained, as though Four Tet had stepped away from the machinery around an album to concentrate on the pleasure of making one.
Released through Hebden’s own Text Records on 14 October 2013, Beautiful Rewind is his seventh studio album. Wikipedia places electronica, trip hop, tech house, old-school jungle and UK garage among its stylistic reference points, and those histories can be heard as materials rather than rules. Beats flicker and stumble, low frequencies arrive with club weight, voices are cut into fragments, and gentler melodic passages keep the record from becoming a pure exercise in rhythm.
“Kool FM” makes the jungle lineage explicit even in its title, borrowing the name of the London pirate radio station, and the track later appeared on the Worldwide FM station in Grand Theft Auto V.
But Beautiful Rewind works best as a sequence rather than a collection of references. Hebden has a gift for putting rough, grainy sounds beside moments of surprising warmth. The music can seem skeletal one minute and densely layered the next, with repetition used less to hypnotise than to make tiny changes matter.
Critics responded strongly, and its Metacritic score reflected broad acclaim despite the deliberately low-key release strategy. That tension is part of its charm. Beautiful Rewind belongs to club culture but does not need a dancefloor; it knows electronic music’s past without turning nostalgic; it is meticulously assembled without advertising its cleverness. More than a decade on, the record still feels refreshing because it trusts the listener to come closer rather than constantly reaching out for attention.
