Back at the Chicken Shack is a studio album by Jimmy Smith, released on 12 February 1963, under the Blue Note label. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on 25 April 1960, the album features a blend of jazz, soul jazz, and hard bop styles. It was produced by Alfred Lion.
The album includes notable musicians such as Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar for tracks 1 and 4, and Donald Bailey on drums. Back at the Chicken Shack is recognised as a significant work in Smith’s discography, often praised for its vibrant performances and musical cohesion.
Included in the album are tracks like “Back at the Chicken Shack” and “Minor Chant,” among others. A later reissue in 1987 incorporated additional tracks, extending the total length to 43 minutes and 35 seconds.
The album’s cover design was handled by Reid Miles, with photography by Francis Wolff, and liner notes provided by Ira Gitler.
