Hard to believe that Awake is ten years old. What began as a solo project under Tycho had, by 2014, quietly transformed into something far more collaborative — and far more immediate.

Scott Hansen’s reflections on the record underline just how pivotal that moment was. After touring extensively behind Dive, he, Zac Brown and Rory O’Connor wanted to bottle the visceral energy of the live show. The result was an album recorded over ten months in 2013 that deliberately stripped back the sweeping ambience of Dive in favour of focus, drive and clarity. Where earlier material drifted like a daydream, Awake pulses with intent.

That shift was more than aesthetic. Bringing Rory’s live drumming to the forefront reshaped the music’s architecture. The rhythms feel physical, grounded — no longer tucked beneath layers of synthesiser but allowed to breathe. Tracks like “Montana” and the title cut signal a new chapter: concise, melodic and propulsive. Meanwhile, “See” and “Dye” gently bridge past and present, retaining the warmth and glow that defined Tycho’s earlier work while embracing a more band-oriented dynamic.

Recorded between a Tahoe cabin and the hills of Santa Cruz, the album captures a sense of place without ever feeling static. Working again with engineer Count Eldridge, Hansen and the band refined their approach, letting basslines and guitar figures carry emotional weight that might once have belonged to ambient textures alone. The sound is still luminous, still unmistakably Tycho — but sharper, more defined.

Awake also marked a personal turning point for Hansen. Known visually as ISO50, he had long balanced design and music; here, music became the singular focus. That commitment shows. The album feels cohesive and purposeful, less like a collection of sketches and more like a fully realised statement.

A decade on, Awake stands as the beginning of Tycho’s evolution from bedroom project to fully formed band — a record that didn’t just capture a live energy, but set the tone for everything that followed.
