”Autofiction,” the ninth studio album by English alternative rock band Suede, was released on 16 September 2022, marking their return after a four-year hiatus. Produced by longtime collaborator Ed Buller, the album departed from their recent orchestral works, embracing a raw and angry sound.
The album’s creation was influenced by Brett Anderson’s memoirs, leading to an autobiographical focus. “Autofiction” explores the genre of blending memoir and fiction, acknowledging the inherent manipulation of truth in art.
Originally intended for live recording in small venues under the name “Crushed Kid,” the COVID-19 pandemic altered these plans. Recorded primarily in London, with additional sessions in Stockholm and Bangkok, the album aimed to capture a live sound, minimizing overdubs.
Released on 16 September 2022, “Autofiction” debuted at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, selling 14,038 copies. Described by Brett Anderson as Suede’s “punk record,” it marked a stylistic departure.
Critical reception for “Autofiction” was overwhelmingly positive. Metacritic assigned it a score of 85/100, indicating universal acclaim. Reviewers praised its raw energy, gritty sentiment, and profound lyricism. Bella Savignano of Clash noted its simultaneous forward-looking and nostalgic qualities. Phil Mongredien from The Guardian hailed it as a late-career triumph, while Andrew Tendell of NME celebrated Suede’s return to garage rock, describing the band as having a “lust for life.” Kevin Harley of Record Collector appreciated the album’s forward-thinking approach, avoiding the pitfalls of a back-to-basics album. AllMusic’s Stephen Thomas Erlewine concluded that “Autofiction” showcased Suede’s distinctive blend of post-punk, glam, and poetry, creating a full, complete, and alive album.
