Ascend

Immersed in the primal rhythms of Ouidah’s drums and the essence of Erzulie, VODUN emerges as a unique blend of Afro-Metal-Soul-Psych.

Upon playing Vodun’s “Ascend,” it’s evident that the London-based thrash metal trio embraces their distinct style without hesitation. Their sound intertwines heavy, distorted guitars and tribal drums with Chantal Brown’s powerful vocals, drawing lyrical inspiration from West African Vodou.

“Ascend” embodies Vodun’s fierce spirituality and feminism, evident in every track. From the tight guitar riffs of “Spirits Past” to the thunderous drum rolls of the title track, and the jubilant chants of “Rituals” to the closing anthem “For Your Kin,” the album defies genre boundaries.

While “Ascend” may be intense to absorb in one sitting, particularly for those leaning towards soul over metal, it undeniably showcases Vodun’s ability to create a dark yet uplifting musical experience.
