Following the phenomenal success of Purple Rain could easily have invited more of the same. Instead, Prince took the opposite approach. Released in April 1985, Around the World in a Day sees Prince and the Revolution sidestep commercial expectation in favour of something far more colourful, adventurous and deeply personal, embracing psychedelic textures, layered arrangements and an unmistakable sense of artistic freedom.

Rather than chasing another blockbuster, Prince immersed himself in a denser, more imaginative sound world. Unconventional instrumentation, cryptic lyricism and richly detailed production define an album that rewards repeated listens, revealing new colours and ideas with every spin. Even its striking painted sleeve reflected Prince’s desire to shift attention away from himself and towards the music as a complete artistic statement.

That ambition extended to its release. At Prince’s request, the album arrived with remarkably little promotion, allowing listeners to absorb the record before any singles emerged. It was a bold move for an artist at the peak of his commercial powers, yet one that perfectly matched the album’s independent spirit.

Despite its less immediate sound, Around the World in a Day became Prince and the Revolution’s second consecutive number one album on the Billboard 200 and produced two enduring Top 10 singles in “Raspberry Beret” and “Pop Life”. While initial reactions from some audiences were mixed, the album’s reputation has steadily grown, with later critics recognising its willingness to take creative risks at precisely the moment when repeating past success would have been the easier path.

Nearly four decades on, Around the World in a Day stands as one of Prince’s most fascinating artistic pivots. Bold, unpredictable and endlessly inventive, it captures an artist refusing to be confined by expectation, proving that genuine creativity often lies in choosing the road few would expect.
