“Arise” marks the fourth studio release by Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura, hitting the shelves in 1991 under the label of Roadrunner Records. Garnering praise from heavy metal stalwarts like Rock Hard, Kerrang!, and Metal Forces upon its debut, it stands as a revered gem among long-standing fans. While maintaining the death/thrash style of its predecessor, “Beneath the Remains”, the album showcased a burgeoning experimental edge to Sepultura’s sound.

Dabbling in industrial music, hardcore punk, and Latin percussion, “Arise” reflected the band’s venture into diverse musical territories. The subsequent tour spanning 1991 to 1992 became their lengthiest yet, encompassing 220 shows across 39 countries. Notably, the album achieved gold certification in Indonesia during this extensive trek, marking a significant milestone in the band’s career, eventually attaining platinum status worldwide by tour’s end.

Production-wise, the band journeyed to Florida in August 1990 to craft the album, benefiting from a $40,000 budget courtesy of Roadrunner. Renowned producer Scott Burns oversaw the process at Morrisound Studio, facilitating improved production values. Notably, drummer Igor Cavalera and Burns devoted considerable time to refining the drum kit’s sound, underscoring the band’s commitment to sonic excellence.

Musically, “Arise” witnessed a slight departure from their breakneck pace, incorporating groove-laden rhythms courtesy of drummer Igor Cavalera. The album also showcased Sepultura’s willingness to explore non-metal influences, with hints of industrial music evident through samples and sound effects. Notable tracks like “Altered State” introduced Latin percussion and “tribal” drumming, while the band’s affinity for hardcore punk surfaced in songs like “Subtraction” and “Desperate Cry”.

The promotional tour for “Arise” commenced immediately after the album’s recording, embarking on a global odyssey spanning two years. Noteworthy performances included a slot at the prestigious Rock in Rio 2 festival in Brazil, attracting a massive audience of 70,000 spectators. However, a concert in São Paulo marred by crowd-related violence underscored the challenges faced by the band amid their burgeoning success.

Critical acclaim for “Arise” transcended international boundaries, with Brazilian newspapers lauding the band’s evolving soundscapes. Overseas, esteemed publications like Melody Maker and NME hailed Sepultura’s potential for global stardom, cementing their status as metal icons. The album’s commercial success was reflected in its gold certification in Indonesia and silver certification in the United Kingdom, with global sales surpassing the 1 million mark by 1993.

Over the years, “Arise” has endured as a seminal release in Sepultura’s discography, celebrated by critics and fans alike. Recognised as a quintessential death metal classic, it earned a coveted spot in Decibel magazine’s “Hall of Fame” in 2016, solidifying its status as a timeless masterpiece.
