Antidotes is the inaugural studio album by the British indie rock group Foals. It was initially released on 24 March 2008, by Transgressive Records in the United Kingdom, followed by its release on 8 April 2008, in the United States through Sub Pop.
The album encompasses a blend of indie rock, dance-punk, post-punk revival, and math rock, spanning a duration of 46 minutes and 49 seconds. Its lyrical themes are diverse yet often melancholic, predominantly focusing on interpersonal relationships, as exemplified by the four singles: “Balloons”, “Cassius”, “Red Socks Pugie”, and “Olympic Airways”.
Recorded during the summer of 2007 at Stay Gold Studios in Brooklyn, the album was produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio. However, Foals later remixed Antidotes in London, expressing dissatisfaction with Sitek’s initial production approach. The band praised Sitek’s involvement for adding depth to the tracks without overshadowing their original sounds.
The album achieved significant commercial success, peaking at number three on the UK Albums Chart. In the United States, it reached number 28 on the Top Heatseekers chart. Antidotes remains a pivotal release in Foals’ discography, showcasing their musical versatility and innovative production techniques.
The tracklist includes notable songs like “The French Open”, “Electric Bloom”, and “Two Steps, Twice”, alongside bonus tracks available on various editions and platforms.
Foals’ lineup during the recording included Yannis Philippakis on vocals, guitar, and drums, Jack Bevan on drums, Jimmy Smith on guitar, Walter Gervers on bass and backing vocals, and Edwin Congreave on keyboard and backing vocals. Additionally, several guest musicians contributed to the album’s brass sections.
Antidotes’ impact was further underscored by its subsequent touring activities and the band’s growing recognition in the indie rock scene.
