Released on 21 December 1999, …And Then There Was X marked a significant moment in DMX’s career, solidifying him as a dominant force in rap. His third studio album, released through Def Jam Recordings, Island Def Jam, and Ruff Ryders Entertainment, not only showcased his raw, commanding presence but also captured the gritty energy of late ’90s hip hop. Nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2001 Grammys, the album proved to be both a critical and commercial triumph.

The album’s first single, “What’s My Name,” dropped on 28 December 1999 and made an immediate impact, peaking at #67 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, it was the second single, “Party Up (Up in Here),” released in February 2000, that truly defined DMX’s career. With its raucous energy and anthem-like appeal, the track soared to #27 on the Hot 100, becoming his most successful single to date. “What These Bitches Want,” featuring Sisqó, followed in June 2000 and also enjoyed success, peaking at #49 on the chart.

…And Then There Was X was an instant commercial powerhouse. Debuting at #1 on the US Billboard 200, it sold a staggering 698,000 copies in its first week. This marked DMX’s third US number-one debut, a testament to his rising prominence in the rap scene. The album quickly dropped to #2 in its second week but still moved an additional 399,000 copies. By 7 February 2001, it was certified five times platinum by the RIAA, reflecting over five million copies shipped in the US. As of October 2009, the album had shipped over 5 million copies, making it DMX’s best-selling release to date.

The album’s success was underscored by DMX’s high-energy presence on the road. In late 2000, he joined the Anger Management Tour, alongside Limp Bizkit and Godsmack, becoming the only hip-hop act on the second leg of the tour. His powerful stage presence resonated with audiences across the country, helping to further cement his reputation as one of the most electrifying performers of his era.

In the context of DMX’s career, …And Then There Was X stands as a landmark release. It encapsulates his unique blend of aggression, charisma, and vulnerability, paving the way for the rapper to solidify his place in hip-hop history.
