American VI: Ain’t No Grave is the sound of Johnny Cash facing the inevitable with defiance, grace and an unshakable sense of faith. Released three days before what would have been his 78th birthday, the album collects songs recorded during the same sessions as American V: A Hundred Highways, in the final months of his life. Produced by Rick Rubin, it completes the cycle that began with their 1994 collaboration — a late-career renaissance that redefined both artist and producer.
Unlike earlier entries in the series, American VI contains no revisits to Cash’s back catalogue. Instead, he interprets other writers’ songs with a rawness that strips them of artifice. His voice, worn but resolute, sits front and centre, surrounded by sparse instrumentation and Rubin’s patient, unhurried production. The title track opens like a benediction — a spiritual battle cry that’s both fragile and unbreakable. Songs such as “I Corinthians 15:55” and “Cool Water” hum with quiet devotion, while “For the Good Times” feels like a whispered farewell.
Critics largely received the album with reverence. The Daily Telegraph called it “Cash’s final, life-affirming masterpiece”, while The Independent hailed it as a fitting close to his extraordinary run of late work. Some found Rubin’s hand too heavy, but others — like The A.V. Club and MSN Music — praised its balance of gravity and hope. For many, this was the sound of a man making peace, not surrender.
Commercially, American VI was a success, debuting at number three on the US Billboard 200 and reaching the UK top ten. But its legacy is emotional rather than statistical. This is Cash’s last sermon — an album that stares down mortality and, somehow, finds light.
